The Republican-led House of Representatives has failed to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his handling of the migrant crisis at the US-Mexico border.
The tally was 216-214 with all but four Republicans in favour of impeachment. All Democrats voted against.
Appointed by President Joe Biden, Mr Mayorkas would have been the first cabinet secretary impeached since 1876.
He has defended his agency's work, calling the claims "baseless".
Three Republicans, Ken Buck, Tom McClintock and Mike Gallagher, voted no.
A fourth, Blake Moore, switched his vote from yes to no, possibly for procedural reasons.
Impeachment, a process set out in the US constitution, is the first step in removing a federal official.
Even if the House had passed the vote, Mr Mayorkas was unlikely to have been found guilty by the Democratic-controlled Senate.
