Cushing leaves New York City amid Arsenal links

New York City head coach Nick Cushing has been sacked by the club amid interest from Women's Super League club Arsenal.

Cushing, who led former club Manchester City to the WSL title in 2016 during a seven-year spell in charge, is one of the candidates to replace Jonas Eidevall in north London.

Cushing said earlier this month there had been no contact with the Gunners and that he would remain in charge of the Major League Soccer club in 2025, but New York City have decided it is time to move on.

"While we are incredibly appreciative for all he has done for the club, at this current time, we believe it's best to move the team in a new direction as we plan for the 2025 season and beyond," New York City said.

"We would like to sincerely thank Nick for his contributions and wish him and his family all the very best in their future endeavours."

Arsenal have been without a manager since Eidevall resigned on 15 October following defeat by Chelsea at Emirates Stadium.

Under interim manager Renee Slegers they have picked up six wins from seven matches and sealed a place in the Women's Champions League quarter-finals.

Englishman Cushing, 40, joined New York City as assistant manager in 2020 before becoming head coach in 2022.

His departure comes after guiding the team to a sixth-placed finish in the league and reaching the MLS play-off semi-finals.
