Election bet 'huge error', Tory candidate admits

A Conservative election candidate was repeatedly asked if he had inside information when he placed a bet on the date of the general election.

Craig Williams, an aide to the prime minister in the last parliament told BBC reporter Joe Pike he had "clearly made a huge error of judgement", but would not be adding to his previous statement that the Gambling Commission was investigating because this was "an independent process".

The Guardian has claimed that Mr Williams placed a £100 bet on a July election three days before the PM announced it would take place on 4 July.

The other candidates standing in Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr are Jeremy Brignell-Thorp, Green Party; Oliver Lewis, Reform UK; Glyn Preston, Liberal Democrat; Elwyn Vaughan, Plaid Cymru; Steve Witherden, Labour
