Britain's elections watchdog has revealed it was the victim of a "complex cyber-attack" first identified in October last year.
The Electoral Commission said unspecified "hostile actors" had managed to gain access to copies of the electoral registers.
The attack enabled hackers to access its emails and "control systems" from August 2021, it added.
The watchdog said it was hard to know exactly what files were accessed.
