Owen FarrellFarrell (centre) won the first of his 94 England caps against Scotland in 2012

England captain Owen Farrell will miss the entire Six Nations after having surgery on an ankle injury later on Wednesday.

Farrell, who has not played since limping out of England's win over Australia in November was set to make his comeback in Saracens' game against London Irish last weekend.

However, he was injured in a training-ground collision in the build-up to that match.

Saracens said they are expecting Farrell to be out for eight to 10 weeks.

More to follow.

My view is that without the shackles of the omnipresent Farrell this Eng team can finally progress - we can have an actual top 10 or top 12 in the team, not a stalwart who is no longer either of those things.

I wonder who the next scapegoat will be??

Not a fan but sorry he has been declared unfit.
I hope he comes back to playing fitness asap

Its a shame. You can easily tell the comments from those who never played the game. Owen is a nightmare to play against. Hard tackler and great hands.

The one thing I'm worried about is the same bile from people aimed at Smith if they don't have a good tournament this year

End of the road for him. must be difficult for him as an athlete. gave it his all and I'm sure england fans are thankful for his efforts on the pitch.

England (as they have done for the past 10 years) need a centre partnership. who is going to play 12 inside slade. if they shore this up then they will be a force but needs to be priority. will Manu ever be fit again do we think?

Definitely not the end of the road for him if Eddie is still in charge, of which I'm thankful.

Is this deserving of the 'Breaking News' headline ? ! Don't think so. Whilst injury to any sportsman is not great, this is the opportunity for the team/squad to press on without him & endeavour to build a decent team around the youngsters. EJ's hand has been forced - he has to do without him.

We will miss him, those calling for him to be dropped are clueless and probably never played rugby. Fast turn-around, Farrell.

    Wee Eddie is lucky.
OF has had little top level rugby over the past couple of years, and the little he’s had he’s been on poor form.
Maybe good for OF to be in the wider squad, but not in the match day 23.

Plenty of sad comments from sad little people on here.
Hope the treatment and recovery go well Owen.

I agree, I’m gutted for Faz as an individual, but with an eye on the World Cup in France next year, and not a massive amount of tests in between this might actually be for the greater good.

This will make the game quicker - must waste quarter of game waiting for him to kick

Never sure why this guy gets the flak he does. Is it because he is not Johnny Wilkinson?

Most unfortunate, however, this will be a great opportunity for another player.

    Get well soon Owen!

all those comments about how he will not be missed is very petulant. Whilst he may be off form, he is a leader in the dressing room and will be missed. I wish him a quick return and hopes he gets back playing the game he loves soon!

As a Scotland fan, I am really gutted for him. I was really looking forward to seeing him go against a fit Finn Russell. Let's see what the wee lad Marcus can do

Replacing him with Ford can only be a positive for England, not so for the Tigers though!
