The Nottingham Panthers' Challenge Cup match at Sheffield Steelers has been abandoned following a "major medical emergency" involving one of the Nottingham players at Sheffield Arena.

The game was stopped in the second period when the player sustained a serious cut to his neck from a skate.

The individual received CPR as he was treated by paramedics on the ice and the players formed a ring around him.

Protective screens were raised and the players returned to the locker rooms.

The Panthers tweeted shortly after that the 8,000 fans in attendance had "been asked to leave the building due to a major medical emergency".

BBC Radio Sheffield's Peter Spencer was in attendance and reported on X, formerly Twitter: "Nottingham Panthers player badly hurt after a collision in mid-ice.

"Paramedics are now on the ice, players are forming a ring around him and now screens are up around him. Awful scenes here at Sheffield Arena. The period is ended."

The player has been taken to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.
