Late winner against Glasgow City puts Celtic top of SWPL

Celtic moved to the top of the SWPL table as Colette Cavanagh's 89th-minute strike delivered victory against reigning champions Glasgow City.

After a lacklustre first half, centre-back Chloe Craig fired Fran Alonso's side ahead from the penalty spot after Kenzie Weir hauled down American forward Kit Loferski inside the box.

The Scotland youth international was shown a red card to compound the visitors' woe.

Last season's top scorer Lauren Davidson pulled City back level with the help of a deflection from Celtic captain Kelly Clark, but Leanne Ross' side could not hold out for a point.

Midfielder Cavanagh, who is back for her third spell with the club, chested the ball down before hammering home an outstanding first-time effort to ensure Celtic's 100% start to the season was maintained.

Celtic are now undefeated in their last four encounters with City, and move five points above the 16-time league winners.

Second-placed Rangers are two points behind, with the first derby of the season taking place on 22 October.

Celtic host Motherwell on Sunday, while City entertain Spartans before their Champions League play-off first leg against SK Brann on Wednesday.
