Newcastle United left-back Jamal Lewis is on the verge of a shock move to Brazilian giants Sao Paulo.

The 26-year-old, who joined the Magpies in 2020 for £15m from Norwich, is understood to be in Brazil finalising the move.

Whilst neither club has yet confirmed the transfer, Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill revealed that the move was on the cards.

"Jamal is planning to join us later in the week after he completes his visa requirements and medical checks in Brazil," said O'Neill, confirming Lewis would report late for NI's upcoming Nations League fixtures against Luxembourg and Bulgaria.

"We wish him the best of luck in his new move to Sao Paulo."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was asked about player departures from St James' Park after their 2-1 win over Tottenham on Sunday and said Lewis' departure was a "possibility".

"Maybe the players that have been linked with a move, like Jamal Lewis could possibly leave, but certainly we hope no one else does," Howe said.

Lewis has never been able to establish himself as a regular in the side since signing on a five-year deal in 2020 and has only made 36 appearances in Newcastle colours, the last of those back in January 2023.

The defender, who has won 36 caps for Northern Ireland, spent last season on loan at Watford. However, he has not been involved in any of Newcastle's opening games of the season.
