New parents could save £500 per year on baby formula by shopping around, the UK's competition watchdog has said.
Profits on branded products have increased more than costs over the past two years, including for formula, the Competition & Markets Authority said.
As a result shoppers have increasingly turned to own-label products, but there are not many baby formula alternatives.
The findings are part of an analysis of pricing in 10 categories, including milk, baked beans and bread.
The watchdog will probe this market further, and will also examine supermarket loyalty card schemes.
Families could make significant savings on baby formula over the first year of a baby's life by buying cheaper formula - which needs to follow rules on providing the nutrients babies need.
