The schools minister has explained why he kept his private life with his now-husband secret for many years.

Nick Gibb said he kept his relationship with his partner "very private" until they married in 2015, but they had now been together for 36 years.

The Conservative MP told Nick Robinson's Political Thinking podcast it was "very difficult" to be openly gay in public and professional life in the 1980s and 1990s, before the changes in the law introduced by Tony Blair and David Cameron.
