Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has written to P&O Ferries "raising concerns" about the treatment of the 800 staff the company made redundant on Thursday.

He has also questioned the "legality" of the move and is "reviewing P&O Ferries' contracts across government".

Mr Shapps added he was "deeply concerned" at how the decision was communicated with government.

P&O Ferries is owned by DP World which owns ports at London and Southampton.
