Rock band Paramore have pulled out of a headline performance at a forthcoming festival in Los Angeles.

In an Instagram story on Thursday, the band said that "due to unforeseen circumstances" they were unable to perform at the iHeartRadio ALTer Ego festival on 13 January.

It comes a week after the trio took down all posts and images from their social media accounts in December.

All content from their official website has also been removed.

Frontwoman Hayley Williams, guitarist Taylor York and drummer Zac Farro were due to play alongside other artists including The 1975, The Black Keys, Thirty Seconds To Mars and Yellowcard.

Organisers of the festival have announced that rock band Fall Out Boy will replace Paramore in the concert line-up.

'Level of uncertainty'

In an interview with Uproxx in December, the band said there was a "level of uncertainty" about their future as they had "fulfilled all label obligations and are effectively free agents".

However, Williams reassured fans this did not mean the band were splitting up, and said: "The only thing that matters is we will still get to be each other's community".

Fans have recently been speculating over whether the band have decided to split up.

On X, formerly Twitter, one fan wrote: "What's next, Paramore Spotify page goes blank and all songs are deleted?", while another said they were "very worried" that the band were breaking up.

However, others have said they do not think the band are breaking up. "Am I the only person who isn't worried about Paramore right now? There are so many reasons that they might need to stop away from that show. Can we not jump immediately to code red for once please?" wrote one X user.

Another said it was "pretty common" that artists clear their social media accounts before "a new era", and that Paramore were likely to "come back in a week or two with new band photos and maybe new branding and/or logo".

The band's withdrawal from the ALTer Ego festival could also possibly be down to them being booked to play a bigger festival, which has an exclusivity clause, later in the year.

The US rock band, formed in 2004, are best known for hits including Misery Business, Ignorance and The Only Exception.

They released their sixth album This is Why in February 2023 after a four-year break.

Speaking about the band's break, Williams told BBC Radio 1 their time away allowed her and the band to reflect and think about everything around them.

"We all really needed it to find our identity apart from Paramore and all the public projection we get in our life," she said.

The album, a title inspired by real-world events, was met with critical acclaim and praised as having "uncovered a new warmth" in a five-star review by NME.

In August the band cancelled the final two dates of their tour after Williams became unwell following a lung infection.
