QPR beat Boro to increase pressure on Carrick

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Andre Dozzell scored his first goal in almost four years to help consign winless Middlesbrough to a fourth defeat in five Championship games.

Dozzell netted two minutes before the break with a fierce strike from the edge of the area which flew in past former R's goalkeeper Seny Dieng and in off the left-hand post.

QPR keeper Asmir Begovic pushed away a Darragh Lenihan header in first-half stoppage time and made two good saves to deny Emmanuel Latteh Lath after the break.

The visitors broke away to double their lead with 19 minutes remaining, with Jack Colback converting on the half-volley after Ilias Chair's effort was blocked.

Michael Carrick's Boro - beaten play-off semi-finalists last season - have picked up just one point from their first five games in the second tier, making it the club's worst start to a campaign in their history.

The Teessiders drop to the bottom of the table, while QPR climb two places to 17th after registering a first win in three.

Carrick had transformed Middlesbrough's fortunes after taking charge at the Riverside Stadium last October, guiding the side from 21st in the table to a fourth-placed finish.

But a lack of cutting edge in front of goal which has been all too prevalent this season and proved to be their undoing once again, with Ivorian striker Latte Lath failing to take advantage of several opportunities.

Begovic had already saved from Isaiah Jones and Latte Lath before Dozzell, who last netted for Ipswich Town in an FA Cup tie against Lincoln in November 2019, struck his first goal for Rangers.

The midfielder then put in a crunching challenge early in the second half to break up a Boro attack before Rangers broke up the other end and Sinclair Armstrong tested Dieng.

The visitors' second came from another counter-attack, with summer signing Colback scoring for the second successive game.

The west Londoners' past four league wins have all come away from home - against Burnley and Stoke City in April, and against Cardiff City, and now Middlesbrough this season.
