Rescue centre facing eviction makes funding appeal

An animal rescue centre said it needed to raise £150,000 to buy back its land or would otherwise have to relocate.

Redhead Rescues Animal Sanctuary in Finedon, Northamptonshire, is self-funded and run by volunteers.

The centre is used to assess and exercise the rescue dogs, as well as for grazing the field animals, but the landlord has put the site up for sale.

Sanctuary founder Teresa Underwood said the team would find "something else" if they could not reach their fundraising target.

"It would be a huge loss," said Underwood, writing on her online appeal page.

The centre is hosting a dog show and car boot sale on 24 May at the Woodford community and sports club, near Thrapston, to generate income.

The sanctuary recently spent £9,000 on fencing to ensure security for the animals.

"We've always got too many [animals]," she said.

Most of the animals that come in require medical treatment, neutering and surgery, which can become costly for the sanctuary, and they need new foster homes to be readily available.

The ongoing cost of living crisis has coincided with more people surrendering their pets, in the face of rising veterinary costs.

The money made through donations and charity events goes predominantly on the vet bills as the cost is "through the roof", she explained.

"The bank account [is] pretty much empty."
