Elton Jantjies scored a penalty after the final hooter as South Africa beat New Zealand 31-29 in a thrilling final match of the Rugby Championship.

Damian de Allende and Makazole Mapimpi were the scorers as the Springboks ended a three-match losing streak.

Earlier, an Andrew Kellaway hat-trick helped Australia beat Argentina 32-17 to finish second behind the All Blacks, who secured the title last weekend.

It was the Wallabies' fourth successive win of the competition.

South Africa overturned a 20-14 half-time deficit on Gold Coast after Sevu Reece, Ardie Savea and Brad Weber scored first-half tries for New Zealand.

The All Blacks secured the title with victory over South Africa last weekend, but the world champions will now move back above their rivals to top the world rankings.

The bonus-point victory for the Wallabies was enough to secure a second-place finish behind New Zealand.

Alongside Kellaway, Folau Fainga'a and Samu Kerevi were also on the scoresheet as Australia recorded four successive wins for the first time in the competition.

Kellaway, whose debut came earlier this year, now has eight tries in six starts for the Wallabies and is within touching distance of Israel Folau's record of 10 tries in a debut year.

Thomas Gallo scored two consolation tries for Argentina in the final quarter, but they finish the tour without a win in six matches.
