Police have fired tear gas at protesters marching outside the prime minister's office in Colombo, after Ranil Wickremesinghe declared a state of emergency in the country.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has fled the country on a military jet - reportedly accompanied by his wife - days after demonstrators overran his residence.
