Breaking news

West Bromwich Albion have appointed former Newcastle boss Steve Bruce as their new manager on an 18-month deal.

Ex-Aston Villa, Hull, Sunderland and Birmingham manager Bruce left Premier League Newcastle in October, soon after their Saudi Arabia-backed takeover.

He takes charge of a Baggies side which started the Championship season well, but have since slumped to sixth place.

Bruce has extensive experience in English football's second tier, twice winning promotion to the Premier League with both Birmingham City and Hull City.

Football Management in this country is like watching Australian soaps.
The same handful of actors turning up time and again.

Why the hate on Bruce, when has he actually done a BAD job with the resources at hand? Good luck to him

Same old sneery comments. Cue the cabbage references. He's a good manager especially at this level. Good luck Brucie. Hope you get them up from a Villan.

AV fan here. Decent man ,treated badly almost everywhere he's managed. Why ? His style of football is a hard watch. Did he have the players at his disposal to play more attacking football ? Not really.

It wasn't his football, but the lack of results. He only has a career win rate of just over 37%. He may be a decent man, but he's an awful manager.

Wouldn't it be justice if he gets West Brom up swapping places with Newcastle! Come on Steve,

How is that “justice” when he had 3 years at Newcastle and took the club from mid-table straight into the depths of a relegation battle?

He hadn’t won a single game in the prem this season up to the point he was sacked, and we were playing some of the worst football I’ve seen in the prem. Struggling to get over 25% possession at home against teams in the bottom half.

It is nice to see that something from my childhood is still popular in the modern era. Musical chairs is alive and well in football management.

Just like the nursery rhyme 'The Grand Old Duke Of York', Bruce has the ability to take WBA up to the PL but will then take them straight back down again, assuming he lasts that long.

As an NUFC fan I wish Steve and WBA all the best, hope he does a good job for them.

I think he will do a good job at WBA in the Championship. The problem is he will not be able to do a good job for them in the PL.

I'm sure all the Baggies fans who were concerned about Ishmael's style of play will be buoyant about seeing Bruce's legendary Chip Shop Tiki Taka.

On a serious note he'll probably get them promoted so it's a means to an end.

However unwatchable Bruce's style of play turns out to be, it cannot be less enjoyable than Ismael's, which recently was hoofing it to 5ft 8 strikers and not winning second balls either.

Obvious choice really proven at getting teams promoted did it with Birmingham & Hull. Thought he had retired though to enjoy his money!
Still he has a job on though to make play offs given likes of Coventry, Sheff Utd , Luton etc have games in hand. Middlesbro going well with Wilder & rising fast. Championship is really exciting League what a dog fight.

As an Albion supporter, I have to say it's as weak a division as it's ever been in living memory. We've been woeful since about September, scored 9 goals in 15 games and we're still 6th. Any improvement and we should comfortably make the play-offs.

SB retire, the job will be the death of you. The stress is too much...You dont need the money and have nothing to prove.

Bruce will bring some balance and stability but maybe not the best football

It’s a bit of a 50-50 appointment but could be worse

When he was a blues I really liked him even with his tactics all about pulling your socks up and putting in a shift, seems like a likeable bloke

Nowt wrong with that. Bored stiff with possession based game and teams making pretty patterns. I say let slip the Dogs of War. They don't like it up 'em!!!!

Good luck to Bruce and the Baggies. He's a decent manager with a good track record of managing teams with limited resources. Its easy to sneer but he always gets employed by the people who matter and he always gives the job everything. And I'm a Villa supporter

Need experience so a good move. Albion fans dont expect silky football, that is a media driven myth but they do expect certain standards which Val seemed incapable of realising let alone delivering. That said, some senior players are not escaping the wrath of us fans, they owe us big time and dont have Val's 'style' to hide behind anymore.

Well said Ellie from another Albion fan. A shame Val has gone but the football was awful and both the dressing room and the stadium had turned against him.

How Steve Bruce kept Newcastle going in the abject chaos is beyond me. But he held it together. I would have him in a heartbeat. From a 50 year City fan. All the best Steve - the holiday did not last long!!!

Just to put it out there - Toon fans don't hate Bruce or wish him any negativity. He did what he could at Newcastle, received not a great deal of help from the owner, and it's fair to say that the players liked him. Whatever happens, good luck to the bloke.
